Tectonic modeling of
extensional basins Central in
the course is the connection between lithosphere dynamics and vertical motions
in extensional basin settings. We review different models and concepts for
continental rift basins and passive continental margins and compare model
predictions with various data sets. The latter include the Pannonian/Carpathian
system, the basins of Iberia, the northern Atlantic margins and the European continental rift system. The
polyphase nature of extensional basins will be addressed, incorporating aspects
such as pre-rift mechanical controls on the mode of extension and neotectonic
deformation in varying stress regimes. |
